Laser vs Tixel

The Thermo-Mechanical Ablation (TMA) technology behind Tixel affects the targeted tissue in a similar manner to fractional CO2 and erbium lasers. However, Tixel triumphs over laser treatments with lowered pain sensation, cost effectiveness, quicker healing time, shorter down time, and by not requiring analgesic creams prior to treatment.

Unlike lasers, Tixel has no optics, no high power circuits, no scanners and no water pumps. Tixel does not radiate light and does not present eye-safety hazards. Furthermore, Tixel thermal coagulation is smoke and particle free and therefore does not require the use of smoke evacuators or protective dust masks. Tixel achieves the right level of tissue coagulation without any bleeding.

How does Tixel work?

Thermal energy is transferred to the upper dermis by a hot titanium tip. The proprietary tip consists of an array of tiny pyramids which are heated to a temperature of 400°C. The apex of pyramids transfers energy to the skin by very brief controlled contact. The extend of heat transfer is determined by the titanium tip’s exposure time with the skin. Moreover, in situ disinfection of the titanium tip is achieved by 400°C heating.

Upon contact, the titanium tip dehydrates and fractures the stratum corneum, the outermost keratinizing layer of the skin, with minimal underlying coagulation. The outcome of the contact is an array of microchannels exhibiting efficient absorption of topically applied aqueous solutions.

Studies Reveal Tixel-treated Skin Exhibits 40% Better Permeability

Permeability of human skin to 5-ALA has been studied by Dr. Christine Dierickx. Results show that Tixel treated skin exhibits 40% greater permeability than non treated control.

Relatively Low Pain Levels with Tixel

Pain nociceptors are situated in the deeper epidermis (about 50 µm depth) of the skin. During Tixel treatment, the temperature on the surface of the skin is 400°C. However, it drops to 50°C at a depth of 100µm. Moreover, pain receptors are extremely sensitive to temperature change rate over time. Harris et al reveals that CO2 laser generates heat at an extremely fast pathway. Heating to 400°C takes about 200ns while the Tixel heating effect is slower by at least 1 magnitude of order. Generally, pain levels with Tixel are relatively low compared to ablative laser or RF devices in which temperature at deep layers is much higher and at a faster heating rate.
